Conservation at Ribbonwood Retreat: Protecting New Zealand's Natural Heritage

At Ribbonwood Retreat Franz Josef Glacier, our passion for preserving New Zealand's natural environment goes hand in hand with our commitment to sustainability. We are deeply involved in several conservation initiatives that protect native wildlife, maintain natural habitats and support environmental sustainability. Join us as we share the inspiring story of our conservation efforts and the amazing projects we support.

Protecting New Zealand's Natural Heritage: Sponsoring Avis, the Kea

Avis The Kea

One of the most exciting aspects of our conservation work is our sponsorship of Avis, a charismatic Kea. The Kea, known for its intelligence and playful nature, is a native parrot found in the South Island of New Zealand. Unfortunately, these birds are classified as endangered, facing threats from habitat destruction and predation. Through our sponsorship, we contribute to efforts that protect and study these remarkable birds. We invite you to learn more about Avis and our experience with this initiative. Read more about Avis's profile here.

Julie and Jo: The Tweety Trappers

Our commitment to conservation extends to on-the-ground efforts as well. Julie and Jo, our dedicated team members, are proud to be Tweety Trappers. Their mahi (work) involves maintaining a predator trap line in collaboration with the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Zero Invasive Predators (ZIP).

Predator trapping is crucial for protecting native bird species from invasive predators such as rats, stoats, and possums. By actively managing trap lines, Julie and Jo help create safer environments for native wildlife to thrive. Their hands-on approach is a testament to Ribbonwood Retreat's dedication to preserving New Zealand's unique biodiversity.

Passion for Backcountry Hiking and Support for the Backcountry Trust

Our love for New Zealand's stunning landscapes doesn't stop at our doorstep. As avid backcountry hikers, we deeply appreciate the pristine beauty of the country's wilderness areas. To support the maintenance and preservation of these trails, we proudly donate to the Backcountry Trust.

Hiking To The Siberia Hut

The Backcountry Trust plays a vital role in maintaining and restoring backcountry huts, tracks, and bridges across New Zealand. By supporting this organisation, we ensure that future generations can continue to explore and enjoy the natural wonders of our backcountry areas.

A Holistic Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

At Ribbonwood Retreat, our conservation efforts are part of a broader commitment to environmental sustainability. We believe that protecting wildlife and natural habitats is essential for maintaining the ecological balance and natural beauty of New Zealand.

Our comprehensive approach to sustainability includes energy-efficient practices, waste reduction initiatives, carbon offsetting, and community engagement. By integrating these efforts into our daily operations, we strive to make a positive impact on the environment and inspire others to join us in our conservation journey.
