Waste Reduction and Recycling at Ribbonwood Retreat: A Commitment to a Greener Future

At Ribbonwood Retreat Franz Josef Glacier, our dedication to sustainability extends beyond energy efficiency and conservation projects. One of the core pillars of our eco-friendly initiatives is our comprehensive waste reduction and recycling program. By implementing conscious waste management practices, we strive to minimise our environmental impact and promote a greener future for New Zealand.

Thoughtful Waste Reduction and Recycling

Effective waste separation is crucial for ensuring that recyclable materials do not end up in landfills. At Ribbonwood Retreat, we diligently sort and recycle various types of waste:

Paper, Glass, Aluminium, and Tin Cans

We have established a robust system for separating paper, glass, aluminium, and tin cans. These materials are collected and sent to recycling facilities where they can be processed and reused. This reduces the demand for virgin resources and helps lower our overall carbon footprint.

Composting Green Material

In addition to recycling, we separate green material such as food scraps and garden waste for composting. The compost produced is rich in nutrients and used to nourish our garden, creating a closed-loop system that benefits our environment and enhances the beauty of our property.

We also make our own bio-char and use it as a soil conditioner (pictured below).

Reducing Plastic Waste with Homemade Soap and Pump Bottles

Plastic waste is a significant environmental challenge, and we are committed to minimising its impact through innovative solutions:

Homemade Soap

We take pride in making our own soap, which eliminates the need for plastic packaging and reduces waste. Our guests can enjoy high-quality, eco-friendly soap that reflects our dedication to sustainability.

Guest Shampoo and Conditioner in Pump Bottles

To further reduce plastic waste, we provide shampoo and conditioner in convenient pump bottles. This initiative minimises the use of single-use plastic bottles and packaging, ensuring a more sustainable experience for our guests.

Ensuring Sustainable Sourcing through Supplier Audits

Our commitment to sustainability extends to the products and services we source. We conduct regular audits of our suppliers to ensure they align with our sustainability ethos:

Handcrafted and Organic Products from New Zealand

We prioritise products that are handcrafted in New Zealand and made from organic ingredients. By supporting local artisans and businesses, we not only reduce our carbon footprint but also contribute to the local economy and promote sustainable practices.

Supplier Audits

Through our supplier audits, we assess the environmental impact and ethical practices of our partners. This helps us ensure that every product we use meets our high standards for sustainability and contributes to our overall mission of environmental stewardship.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainable Living

At Ribbonwood Retreat, our waste reduction and recycling efforts are part of a broader commitment to sustainable living. By integrating eco-friendly practices into every aspect of our operations, we aim to inspire our guests and the wider community to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.
